Handmade Candy Bags
Last week my Nana was in town from Oklahoma, staying with us. She and i decided to make 100 candy bags for children at an orphanage that I’ve been to in the Dominican Republic. Some friends of mine was about to leave on a mission trip to there, so we sent these of with them, to fill with candy and pass out to all the girls at the orphanage and all the Pan De Vida-Bread of Life feeding program kids.
The area around the orphanage where all our Bread of Life children live was completely destroyed by hurricane Irene.. Over 37,000 people left with out homes. Before this hurricane hit they lived in “houses” made of sticks, wood, tin, trash bags used to plug up holes, etc.. After, they were left with nothing.. Not even the bare minimum that they had. Praise God that all the children in our program at the orphanage were all safe and accounted for! It’s so sad to know that the little that these families had is now gone. I have two god sons, Danny-11 & his little brother Leonidas-9, in this program and to know that they have nothing breaks my heart. All the clothes, quilts, toys, and pictures that i have sent them is all gone. But my God is good and faithful an my two beautiful god sons are doing great, considering!
With that all being said, i’m sure you can see why these little homemade candy bags would mean so much to these children. They’ll all be carrying them around with them for days!
(To see pictures of the DR see my post “Dominican Republic 2010.“)
Step One
Cute your fabric. Mine were probably 5×7.. So you’ll want to cut them 5×14 then fold them in half and sew the sides.
(You can cut the fabric in two 5×7 pieces but thats more sewing on your part..)
Step Two
Folding your fabric in half (make sure the right-sides are facing inwards, making the back of the fabric on the outside) and sew along the sides, longways.

Step Three
Before turning this inside out.. Double fold the top of the bag, making the hem.
Step Four
Now, turn it inside out!
Step Four
Then iron your bag.
Voila!
We made One Hundred bags.
Step Five
Your going to sew/hem the top of your bag. How ever you choose.
Step Six
Add some kind of ribbon to make handles!
Last but not least.. Fill them with; candy, goodies, treats, gifts, etc!

Here you have it.. Super easy! This is a great way to use up scrap material.. Or just material you know your not going to use in your house.. lol
